Bettendorf, Iowa – When Trudy Handleman turned 102, she didn’t want a typical birthday party. Instead, this kind-hearted woman from Iowa had a special request: 102 canned goods to donate to her local food pantry. Trudy’s idea caught on like wildfire, and her community rallied behind her cause.
An Overwhelming Response
People were so touched by Trudy’s selfless birthday wish that they went above and beyond. In the end, over 400 items were collected for the Friendly House Food Pantry in Davenport. Trudy was thrilled with the incredible response and couldn’t wait to be part of the final step.
Making a Personal Delivery
Not content with just requesting the donations, Trudy joined the staff of Quartet Senior Living, her nursing home, to personally deliver the goods to the food pantry. She wanted to be there to see the impact of her birthday wish firsthand.
A Vital Community Resource
Friendly House is more than just a food pantry. They provide a range of essential services to the community, including affordable childcare, senior and family support, shelter, and tax filing assistance. Trudy’s donation couldn’t have come at a better time, as the pantry typically serves 65-100 families a month.
Inspiring Others to Give
Trudy’s birthday celebration has shown that no matter how big or small the project, if you put your heart into it, you can make a real difference. She hopes her story will inspire others to help those in need, proving that it truly is more fun to give than to receive.
