LAWRENCE, NJ – A joyful day playing outdoors turned into a heartbreaking tragedy in Lawrence Township, New Jersey. A 12-year-old boy lost his life on Monday after a tree fell on him in his backyard, according to police reports.
The Lawrence Township Police Department responded to an emergency call at around 12:09 p.m. on the 100 block of Eldridge Avenue. Officers arrived to find the young boy trapped under a fallen tree. Acting quickly, they freed him and administered CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
Emergency responders from Lawrence Township EMS rushed the boy to Capital Health System Regional Medical Center. Despite their efforts, the child later succumbed to his injuries, police confirmed.
Gusty Winds to Blame for the Fallen Tree
Investigators determined that strong winds caused the tree to topple while the boy was outside with friends. “The tree was blown over by gusty winds, striking the juvenile,” police reported.
School District Offers Support for Grieving Students
In the wake of the tragedy, the Lawrence Township School District has arranged for counselors and therapy dogs to be available for students needing support. Additionally, the Mercer County Traumatic Loss Coalition will assist students throughout the week.
