ST. PAUL, MN – Oopsie daisy—he’s going to regret this in the morning! Thirteen prisoners, including several charged with violent crimes, strolled out of an African jail on New Year’s Eve after a tipsy cop, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, unlocked their cells and told them they could leave to ring in the new year. Talk about an easy escape!
Escape on New Year’s Eve
The incident occurred in Zambia during the early hours of December 31 when the detective, allegedly intoxicated, seized the cell keys from a fellow officer, Constable Serah Banda.
After obtaining the keys, he opened both the male and female detention cells and directed the inmates to walk free. Of the 15 detainees in custody at the time, 13 managed to escape.
Police officials confirmed that the detective fled the scene shortly after releasing the prisoners but was later apprehended. Authorities are now focused on locating the escaped individuals.
Public Safety Concerns
Many of the escapees were being held on charges linked to serious crimes, including assault, theft, and burglary.
Law enforcement has expressed concerns about the potential risks posed by having these individuals at large in the community. Police are urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the fugitives.
Ongoing Search and Public Appeal
The Zambian police have intensified efforts to track down the escapees and bring them back into custody.
Authorities have appealed to the public for assistance, encouraging anyone with relevant information to contact their nearest police station. Despite the ongoing search, no updates on the fugitives’ whereabouts had been provided by police as of Monday.
The situation has drawn significant attention, with law enforcement working around the clock to recapture the suspects and ensure public safety.
