Today on our YouTube channel and on JackAndKitty.com we have released, “8:46 [Incomplete Version]” – a new single from singer-songwriter Jack Norton. The song will be available on Spotify and all streaming platforms as well as all major music retailers worldwide in the coming days. Visitors to YouTube and JackAndKitty.com get a first listen.

“8:46 [Incomplete Version]” was produced by me (Kitty Norton) and the song was written by my husband Jack and I. We were inspired by the murder of George Floyd and its aftermath on the American social landscape. We ended up with bleak, dark and haunting lyrics and a simple, repetitive melody. Why a looping melody? It’s symbolic of history repeating itself. We are from Minneapolis and lived in the neighborhood of Floyd’s killing…in fact Jack’s favorite record store (Vintage Music) sits on the corner of where Mr. Floyd was slain. As an interracial couple from Minneapolis, we have a lot of feelings regarding his killing. Even two years later we are both still processing the horrific event.

Rather than pontificate further, I’d like to share the music video and our lyrics below. It took 8:46 for Floyd to be murdered…the precise length of our song. Can you make it to the end of this video?

Never forget. His name was George.

Xoxo,
Kitty

“8:46 [Incomplete Version]”
Words/music by Jack and Kitty Norton
Norton Family Publishing (ASCAP)

Alone in a dark hotel room, with an empty guitar by your side
as a war wages across the country, there’s a battle going on in your mind.
The lines have been clearly drawn, it doesn’t matter who fires the first round
darkness is a sinking ship of smiles, and I believe we’re all gonna drown.
Skeeter Davis said it better, than I ever could
but in the end it’s all just noise, a minstrel show masked as something good.
As black faces plead for justice, in a land stained with their blood
Beatrice she got a phonograph, but it’s broken now – it’s a real dud.

I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.
I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.

The cuckoo she’s a pretty bird, well she warbles as she flies
sorrow is a soul alone in a room, trading love for likes with notifications dancing in her eyes.
The world has gone mad and Babylon is burning to the ground
we’re standing alone together at the crossroads, oh Lord, I believe we’re sinking down.
There’s a con inside of a con, as another con runs another con’s job
there’s left and right and black and white, there’s a President heading up the lynch mob.
They’ll hang you from the gallows and they’ll call it suicide,
there’s no room left for truth, unless you hide it deep inside of a lie.

I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.
I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.

There’s safety in the shadows of a game played out on the world’s stage
Al Jolson ain’t seen nothin’ yet, lights flicker at the fall of the new age.
Aquarius and her swan song, silent lambs following the golden rule
snuffing a life for eight minutes and forty-six seconds, four clowns riding high amidst a sea of fools.
“In the end nothing matters,” she said, “we just close our eyes and we roll.”
Blackness covers her body, white privilege rules her soul.
Spirits roam madly in the woods, don’t go there if you’re faint of heart
you better get right with Jesus even though Jesus may have been wrong from the start.

I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.
I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.

If you’re waiting for a miracle, buddy, you better get in line
the Shit Show Circus had come to town and you thought carnies were the only ones who lie?
Just another dumb song, by a singer who’s at a loss for words
maybe nothing matters any more, so long as the line between love and theft remains blurred.
The whole got-damned world is crazy, times ain’t what they used to be
P.T. Barnum waltzing Matilda in a world lost out at sea.
So strike a match and watch it burn, there’s no truth in what you know
justice is a noble lie, but in the end we all reap just what we sow.

I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.
I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.
I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.
I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.
I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now.
I’m at the end of the world, I’m where the world ends now…
