The capital of Minnesota is St. Paul and its largest city is Minneapolis. If you hear people say “Twin Cities” what they are talking about is Minneapolis and St. Paul. They are located side by side, with the Mississippi River crossing between.

I mentioned it earlier but maybe you’re still wondering about the Upper Midwest. It’s a geographic region of the United States that encompasses the northern central part of the country. It includes the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.
The region is characterized by a diverse landscape that includes forests, lakes, prairies, and farmland. It is also home to many important cities, including Chicago, Minneapolis, and Detroit.
The Upper Midwest has a rich history and culture, with influences from Native American tribes, European immigrants, and African Americans. Sometimes people think Minnesota is in Canada, and I’m here to tell you that it is not. While Minnesota shares a border with Canada to the north, it is actually one of the 50 states that make up the United States of America.
Why do Minnesotans sound like they are from Canada?
Usually when I travel in Europe and I tell folks I’m from Minnesota they ask where it’s located. To make things simple I say, in the top and middle of America…just below Canada. The funny thing is, when we used to live in Nashville, most folks down South would ask what part of Canada I’m from. I guess my accent sounded funny to their Southern ears.
Minnesotans are known for having a unique accent that is sometimes perceived as sounding similar to a Canadian accent. This is because the region was settled by immigrants from many different parts of Europe and Canada in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and this mix of linguistic influences has contributed to the distinctive way of speaking.
One key aspect of the Minnesota accent is the use of long vowel sounds, particularly in words like “boat,” “home,” and “cold.” This is often referred to as the “Minnesota O,” and is thought to have been influenced by Scandinavian languages, as many early settlers came from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
Another characteristic of the Minnesota accent is the tendency to elongate certain consonant sounds, such as the “L” in words like “milk” and “pillow.” This is known as the “Minnesota L,” and is thought to be influenced by the Irish and Scottish accents of some early settlers.
