Best Winona Coffee Shops

I’m excited to share my fave coffee spots in Winona. When I first moved here I was surprised by how many options for us coffee lovers there were. Sure we have Starbucks and Caribou, but the really great stuff is made by local baristas who specialize in their craft. The love they have for coffee really shines through.

Best Winona Coffee Shops

1. Blooming Grounds Coffee House, 50 E 3rd St., Winona, MN 55987
Blooming Grounds Express Coffee House, 270 W 3rd St #2, Winona, MN 55987
Website

My first pick is Blooming Grounds Coffee House…located in the heart of downtown Winona, Minnesota.

Blooming Grounds is known for its wide variety of coffee drinks, including espresso-based beverages, pour-over coffee, and cold brew. They also offer a selection of teas, smoothies, and other specialty beverages. In addition to their drink menu, Blooming Grounds offers a variety of food options, including breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, and baked goods.

The coffee house’s atmosphere is warm and inviting, with comfortable seating areas and a cozy fireplace. There is also a small outdoor seating area for customers to enjoy during the warmer months. Next door is an open air beer garden which is a fun place to relax if the weather is nice.

One of the unique features of Blooming Grounds Coffee House is its commitment to sustainability. They use only compostable cups and straws, and they work to reduce their waste by recycling and composting. They also source their coffee beans from Fair Trade and organic farms.

There’s also a second location with a convenient drive-thru if you are in a hurry…or you just don’t feel like getting out of your car in the cold Minnesota winter.

2. Acoustic Cafe
77 Lafayette St, Winona, MN 55987
Website

Acoustic Cafe is a popular cafe and live music venue located in Winona, Minnesota. The cafe first opened its doors in 1994 and has since become a staple of the local music scene. Although they don’t have as much live music as they once had, they are still an awesome place to hang out.

Acoustic Café roasts coffee on location and scratch bakes its own bread recipe daily…and their sandwiches are legendary. What makes them so yummy is their special sauce which, besides a secret select blend of spices, includes 100% pure healthy olive oil.

The cafe’s atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with comfortable seating areas and a small outdoor patio. It’s a great spot to relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, and listen to some live music. Jack and I have played many shows at the Acoustic over the years. With its live music performances, tasty food and drink options, and cozy atmosphere, it’s no wonder why it’s become a beloved local institution.

3. Mugby Junction Coffee Roasters
451 Huff St, Winona, MN 55987
718 Mankato Ave, Winona, MN 55987
Website

With a dine-in location on Huff Street and a drive-thru only location on Mankato Avenue, Mugby Junction provides convenience and tasty coffee to its very dedicated customers. Mugby Junction was founded in 2003 in Winona, Minnesota, and is a family-owned business.

Their motto is: “Drink to the lees!”

Drink to the what?

“Drink to the lees” is an old saying with both a literal and figurative meaning. Literally, it means to drink to the bottom of the cup. This is important at Mugby Junction, because they want you to enjoy your coffee, from first sip to last. Figuratively, it means taking time to appreciate the finer things in life, like a great cup of coffee.

Alfred Lord Tennyson made the phrase, “Drink to the lees,” famous but Mugby Junction is making it possible…with fantastic coffee and a chill atmosphere. The Huff Street location is right across the street from Winona State University, so it’s a great spot to work on homework or hang out with friends.

At Mugby you’re not just drinking coffee, you’re drinking to the lees!

4. Blue Heron Coffeehouse
162 W 2nd St, Winona, MN 55987
Website

Blue Heron’s goal is to create a community together. They do this by serving up wholesome, quality food using seasonal, local and organic ingredients. They offer fresh-baked bread, pastries, soups, salads, sandwiches, desserts and specialty crafted tea and coffee beverages. Blue Heron adjusts their menu based on what is seasonally, locally and organically available…which is pretty neat.

They also accommodate most dietary needs, offering a variety of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options regularly.

The driving force behind the Blue Heron Coffeehouse has always been their passion for providing good food and service to our community. They advocate for sustainability and biodiversity and cultivate a sense of community and a gathering space to support local growers, artists and musicians.

Be sure to check their website for hours, sometimes they aren’t open when I’m craving my latte. So know before you go.

5. Bluff Country Co-op
121 W 2nd St, Winona, MN 55987
Website

My last recommendation isn’t really a coffee shop, it’s a grocery store. More specifically, it’s a community owned health food co-op. They have fresh warm coffee, an excellent juice bar and yummy baked treats that you can grab and go. There is a spot for hanging out and enjoying your snack as well.

Bluff Country Co-op is a great place if you’re wanting to eat healthy. They have great fresh produce, a wide selection of vitamins and supplements, and offer a nice selection of vegan and vegetarian foods. Plus, folks at Bluff Country are very, very friendly.
