The sightings, witnessed by seven individuals from different locations within the area, have sparked intense curiosity and speculation. A Strange Night for Seven Witnesses: UFO Sighting in North Dakota
Officials called the sightings “unconfirmed”. Deputies from the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department patrolling the area near the river claimed to not see anything unusual. Federal Aviation Administration officials in Bismarck and Minneapolis reported that pilots flying in the area saw “no unusual occurrences” on the evening of September 4. Furthermore, a controller at the Bismarck airport tower and an official at the Air Traffic Control Center in Farmington, Minnesota (just south of Minneapolis) were also called in for confirmation: no UFO sightings were reported.
But tell all that to the seven witnesses that saw unidentified flying objects over the skies of Bismarck that crisp autumn evening, and they will just scoff.
On September 4, 1982, five different callers reported to the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department that they were seeing something very, very strange northeast of Bismarck near the Missouri River. Two more callers made reports to the Bismarck Police Department just after midnight: they were seeing the same mysterious object.
So, What Did They See?
All of the eyewitnesses claimed to be seeing the same thing: a strange object with two red lights stacked on top of each other. It was flying at remarkable speeds across the evening skies.
Officials did nothing. In fact the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department and the Bismarck Police Department both made the decision to not make any of the reports official or even keep records of the phone conversations.
Yet somehow the Federal Aviation Administration offices in Bismarck and Minneapolis, the Bismarck airport tower and an official at the Air Traffic Control Center in Farmington were all consulted by both teams of law enforcement…over “nothing unusual”!
Newspapers published reports the following morning…and then the story mysteriously died. How could a story of a UFO Sighting in North Dakota die such a quick death?
