AKRON, OH – The sun was setting on another quiet evening in Akron, Ohio, but behind the scenes, law enforcement was racing against time. For three weeks, officers scoured the streets, combed through leads, and followed every trail. By the time it was over, 32 missing children were found. The youngest was 13 years old, and for each of these children, it was a step toward safety after weeks, months, or even years of being gone.

Operation Homecoming, carried out by the U.S. Marshals Service, worked tirelessly alongside the Akron Police Department and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office to locate these missing children between August 19 and September 6.

Their effort was focused on the Akron area, but some children were found as far as Cleveland. One was even discovered in Washington state, over a year after they had been reported missing.

Law Enforcement and Community Collaboration

U.S. Marshal Pete Elliot praised the collaborative efforts that made the operation a success.

“The dedicated work by our Missing Child Unit along with Akron Police and the Sheriff’s Office have made an incredible impact in the safe recovery of these children,” Elliot stated.

He emphasized that the Marshals would continue their work to recover missing children across northern Ohio.

The operation wasn’t just about finding the children but ensuring they were provided with proper care afterward. To achieve this, law enforcement worked with Summit County Children’s Services, which offered necessary resources for the children as they returned to safety.

Akron Police Chief Brian Harding echoed Elliot’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of teamwork across departments.

“The partnership and devoted work by law enforcement in this operation directly led to the safe recovery of the missing child located across the country,” Harding said.

Sheriff Kandy Fatheree also shared her pride in the outcome of the operation, applauding the cooperation between various agencies.

“It is a great example of how collaboration makes us stronger and helps us to better serve and protect our community,” Fatheree remarked.

While this operation has ended, the efforts to keep Akron’s children safe continue. The recovery of these 32 children is a reminder of the dangers that exist but also of the dedication of law enforcement to ensure they return home.
