LEHI, UT – An 8-year-old Utah boy is dead after shooting himself while alone in a vehicle while his mother was inside a convenience store Monday night, authorities said.
Lehi City Communications Manager Jeanteil Livingston said the boy was alone in a vehicle outside a Maverik gas station convenience store at 3569 N. Thanksgiving Way in Lehi, about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City, when the shooting occurred at around 7:40 p.m. Monday.
On-duty officers nearby began performing lifesaving measures until an ambulance arrived to transport the boy to a local hospital in critical condition. He was later flown to a different hospital, but died Tuesday morning.
Witness Doug Shields was pumping gas at the time of the incident, and told KSL TV that he heard the shot, then heard the boy’s mother screaming for help.
āAnd then she goes, āHe shot himself, he shot himself, he shot himself,’ā Shields told the outlet. āAnd I first thought suicide, and she goes, āHe found the gun under my seat and pulled the trigger.ā It apparently was an accident. It was a total accident.ā
Shields said he and another bystander helped the woman to a nearby curb while lifesaving efforts were being performed on the boy, and she passed out. When she came to, Shields said she told him she had gone into the store to get the child a treat.
