Wabasha, Minnesota – It may be known for it’s Grumpy Old Men, but this week in Wabasha, Minnesota, a wonderful news story unfolded as 86-year-old tree farmer, Tom Gosse, celebrated his very first walnut tree harvest. Tom, who has nurtured over 50,000 American black walnut trees on his seventy-acre tree farm, finally saw the fruits of his labor.

On a beautiful Monday morning, Tom began his harvest, choosing two special trees near his house. With a smile, he compared the process to picking a ripe apple, explaining that harvesting trees when they are ready is the way to go.

One of these walnut trees is around a century old, a silent witness to Tom’s family history since they moved to their home when he was just a young boy. The other tree holds a special place in his heart, as he planted it when he was only seven years old and lovingly cared for it over the years. Tom’s friends even noticed that he didn’t like squirrels getting too close to his beloved tree.
