BOISE, ID – In a remarkable turn of events, an 89-year-old hiker was rescued after surviving more than a week alone in Idaho’s rugged wilderness. Bing Olbum, who went missing on August 1 while hiking in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, was located and rescued on August 11.

Disappearance in the Salmon-Challis National Forest

Olbum embarked on his hike from the Hunter Creek Trailhead, a popular starting point in the Salmon-Challis National Forest.

When he failed to reach his intended exit point at the McDonald Creek area, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office initiated a search and rescue operation. The dense forest and challenging terrain made the search effort particularly difficult.

Discovery and Rescue

After several days of intense searching, rescue teams discovered Olbum’s campsite on August 10. The next day, searchers continued their efforts on horseback and successfully located him.

Despite his advanced age, Olbum demonstrated an extraordinary will to survive in the wilderness, managing to endure harsh conditions for over a week.

Recovery and Community Response

Olbum is now back home and recovering from his ordeal. Authorities and the local community have expressed relief and admiration for his resilience.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office has acknowledged the efforts of all those involved in the search and rescue, while also emphasizing the positive outcome of this incident.

The Salmon-Challis National Forest, where Olbum was hiking, covers over 4.3 million acres in east-central Idaho. The area is known for its stunning landscapes and challenging trails.
