Shocking Trespass Leaves Rare Birds at Risk!

BAR HARBOR, ME – The National Park Service on Friday released photos of three suspects who violated a wildlife protection closure at Maine’s Acadia National Park, seeking the public’s help in identifying them.

Park rangers are investigating “multiple violations” of the wildlife protection closure, which was implemented to protect vulnerable peregrine falcons.

At around 11:06 a.m. on July 24, rangers were notified that two male suspects and one female suspect were seen on the Precipice Trail, which, like most of the east face of Champlain Mountain, is closed for several months each year to protect peregrine falcon nesting sites and their surrounding habitat.

Peregrine falcons are federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. According to park officials, human activity can disturb the adult falcons, making them “less attentive to the eggs or chicks.”

Human activity near a nesting area can lead to temporary or permanent abandonment by the adult birds, “leaving chicks susceptible to hypothermia, starvation, and predation.”

Park officials said the protective closure is clearly marked at the site, as well as being “widely publicized” on social media and the Acadia National Park website.

Investigators are asking any visitors who may have been in the area on July 24, or anyone who may have information about the suspects’ identities, to call the NPS Tip Line 888-653-0009 or submit a tip online at go.nps.gov/SubmitATip.

“You don’t have to tell us who you are, but please tell us what you know,” park officials said.
