CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI – What began as a perfect fall day quickly took a turn for the worse at a Wisconsin apple orchard. The sun was shining, the air crisp, and children from a school in Eau Claire were excitedly exploring Bushel and a Peck Apple Orchard. It was supposed to be a day of laughter, apple picking, and hayrides. But the joy soon turned to chaos when a tractor pulling two hay wagons overturned, leaving more than two dozen people injured.

A Fun Field Trip Turns Dangerous

The Chippewa Fire District was called to the scene Wednesday morning after reports of a “tractor accident involving two hay wagons with kids and adults,” Deputy Fire Chief Cory Jeffers said at a press conference. The fire department quickly activated its mass casualty protocols, bringing in additional emergency crews to assist.

The tractor, carrying both children and adults, rolled over without warning. As responders rushed in, the scene was filled with confusion and concern. In total, 25 people were transported to local hospitals. It remains unclear how many of the injured were children or adults, and details about the severity of their injuries have not yet been released.

Emergency Responders Act Quickly to Assist the Injured

Some of the children involved were part of a school field trip from St. Mark Lutheran School. Many parents anxiously awaited news as responders worked to reunite the remaining children with their families. Thankfully, all children left at the orchard were safely brought back to their loved ones.

Despite the alarming nature of the accident, there was relief in one important detail: no fatalities. Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes confirmed that, while the accident was serious, no lives were lost. This provided some comfort to families and community members as they grappled with the day’s events.
