RICHMOND, IN – An Indiana man has confessed to a horrifying scheme where he poisoned his wife’s Coca-Cola with drugs to kill her and marry her daughter. Alfred W. Ruf, 71, admitted in Wayne County Court that he laced his wife’s drinks with cocaine, MDMA, and benzodiazepines on around a dozen occasions between September and December 2021.
Ruf’s sinister plan involved convincing his stepdaughter and her friend to help him execute the plot.
According to court documents, the stepdaughter allegedly wanted her mother out of the way to access her life insurance policy and had promised to marry Ruf once the wife was gone.
Each time Ruf poisoned his wife’s drink, she would be incapacitated for about 13 hours. During these episodes, Ruf claimed his stepdaughter and her friend would visit the home while she was under the influence. He said they would have sex with him while his wife was incapacitated.
The plot unraveled when the wife, who had been hospitalized multiple times for unexplained symptoms, became suspicious.
Tests revealed traces of the drugs in her system, and she provided police with a Coke can containing residue from the poison.
Ruf was arrested in early 2022, and while authorities continue to investigate the stepdaughter and her friend, no arrests have been made in connection with them.
Ruf was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated battery. A conspiracy to commit murder charge was dropped as part of the plea deal.
