ST. PAUL, MN – Toot! Toot! Amtrak is seeing a surge in popularity, with ridership numbers reaching new heights. The national rail service carried 32.8 million passengers in fiscal year 2024, marking a 15% increase from the previous year. This milestone signals a clear trend: more people across the United States are choosing train travel as their preferred travel option. With plans to further expand and improve its services, Amtrak is positioning itself for an even larger role in the nation’s transportation network.

Record Ridership Growth in 2024

Amtrak’s fiscal year 2024 results reveal a significant increase in passengers, with 32.8 million riders, up from 28.6 million in the previous year. This growth, a 15% year-over-year rise, demonstrates the rising demand for rail travel in the U.S. Stephen Gardner, Amtrak’s CEO, attributed this success to the desire for efficient and convenient travel options. “This record ridership shows that travelers throughout the U.S. want efficient travel options, and we are committed to meeting that demand,” Gardner said in a statement.

Looking ahead, Amtrak has set an ambitious target: to double its ridership to 66 million passengers annually by 2040. This growth target highlights the company’s confidence in its expanding services and infrastructure improvements.

Investing in Infrastructure for the Future

In order to meet rising demand, Amtrak is making significant investments in its infrastructure and fleet. The company has allocated $4.5 billion toward its most extensive transformation to date, a move designed to enhance both the customer experience and operational efficiency. These investments are part of a broader effort to modernize Amtrak’s infrastructure, improve reliability, and expand services across the country.

Adding to this, Amtrak has received over $10 billion in competitive federal grants, which will be directed toward current and future building projects. These funds will support the development of new trains, bridges, and tunnels, as well as upgrades to existing infrastructure. “As we build for the future, our investments in new equipment, expanded service, and critical infrastructure will continue to elevate the experience from coast to coast,” said Roger Harris, president of Amtrak.

One of the most notable projects is the replacement of the 151-year-old Baltimore and Potomac Tunnel. This tunnel, a crucial passage between Washington, D.C., and New Jersey, has long been a bottleneck in the rail system, contributing to delays and congestion. The new tunnel is expected to alleviate these issues and improve service along the busy Northeast Corridor.

Expanding Service Across the U.S.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, Amtrak is expanding its network with new routes and improved stations. Starting in 2025, the company will reintroduce rail service to the Gulf Coast for the first time in two decades. The new twice-daily train service will run between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama, offering travelers a convenient and scenic route between these two cities.

Amtrak is also making upgrades to routes in several states, including North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maine. These improvements are part of a broader plan to develop 69 new intercity passenger rail corridors, expanding Amtrak’s reach and improving service across the country.

For budget-conscious travelers, Amtrak is introducing more affordable fare options. The Flex Fare and Value Fare ticket structures offer greater flexibility for passengers. Flex Fare tickets are fully refundable, making them ideal for those with uncertain travel plans. For travelers who are more certain of their travel dates, Value Fare tickets offer a lower price and a 75% refund if canceled.

Additionally, Amtrak is rolling out several enhancements to the booking process and passenger experience. Premium travelers on Acela trains, the company’s flagship high-speed service along the Northeast Corridor, can now enjoy an upgraded dining experience. The new menu features sustainably sourced ingredients and local brands, ensuring a top-tier experience for passengers on these premium routes.

Amtrak’s rapid growth and its plans for further investment in infrastructure, routes, and services signal an exciting future for rail travel in the U.S. As the company works toward its goal of 66 million passengers by 2040, riders can expect more options, improved experiences, and continued innovation in the years ahead.
