ST. PAUL, MN – In a startling revelation, a new survey has unveiled that nearly half of Americans are ditching their summer vacation plans this year. The soaring cost of living has left many families feeling the pinch, forcing them to forgo much-needed getaways.

As prices for essentials skyrocket, even a simple trip to unwind has become a luxury few can afford.

Rising Costs Affect Travel Plans

The survey, conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategy in partnership with Newsweek, polled 2,500 eligible U.S. voters. Forty-four percent of respondents stated they have no travel plans for the next three months. An even higher percentage, 53%, expressed a desire to vacation but found it financially unfeasible because of rising prices.

Adjusting Plans Due to Inflation

For those who are planning to travel, inflation has significantly influenced their decisions. Fifty-five percent are opting for more affordable destinations than initially planned. Additionally, 30% have downgraded their lodging to save money, and 45% have chosen cheaper modes of transportation to reach their destinations.

Travel Trends Among Americans

The survey, conducted at the end of June, also highlighted travel trends for the upcoming months. Seventeen percent of Americans plan to travel abroad, 29% will travel domestically, and 10% will take both domestic and international trips.

Generational Impact

High travel costs are affecting various generations similarly. Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Zers are all reporting difficulties in affording trips due to high living expenses.

Ongoing Financial Struggles

Although inflation has decreased since its peak in June 2022, many Americans are still grappling with higher living costs. Essentials such as housing, food, and gas continue to strain budgets, leaving less money for travel.

Despite a slight reduction in travel costs over the past year, it has not been enough to counterbalance the overall increased cost of living.
