ST. PAUL, MN – Before Jack and I came back home to Minnesota, we lived in a small North Dakota town with a population of just 22 people. But it wasn’t always that way. Our elderly neighbors loved to share stories with us about the “good old days” – when the town was bustling, full of life and energy.

It had a grocery store, several churches, and bars where locals would gather to share news and stories. Now, not a single business remains. The streets are empty, the buildings boarded up. The life has been drained from it. That’s the reality facing so many small towns across America today. It makes you wonder, could your hometown be next?

Signs of a Town in Trouble

As you look around your own town, are things starting to change? Are businesses closing their doors? Do you notice fewer kids playing in the streets or attending the local school? These are the warning signs. Economic decline, population loss, and an aging community can all point to a town on the brink of becoming a ghost town.

Many places that once thrived are now shadows of their former selves. It’s happening everywhere, from the Midwest to the coasts. Cities might be booming, but small towns are fading away.

The Warning List: Towns at Risk

Let’s take a closer look at towns on the edge. In the Midwest, especially here in Minnesota and surrounding states, many small communities are shrinking fast. Farmers are retiring, factories are closing, and the young people are leaving for the big cities, never to return.

Small towns along the coasts aren’t safe either. Population shifts, economic pressures, and environmental factors like rising sea levels are putting these communities at risk.

Even rural America, once the backbone of the country, is in trouble. The places that raised generations are now being abandoned. As the buildings crumble, so do the memories. The towns where neighbors helped each other, where life was simpler, are now disappearing.

What’s Driving the Trend?

The forces pushing small towns to the edge are powerful, and many are beyond local control. Automation and technology have eliminated jobs that once supported families. The rise of remote work means people can live anywhere, but instead of staying in small towns, they’re flocking to urban areas with more amenities.

And what about the next generation? Without opportunities, younger people have no reason to stay. They leave for college, and after that, they rarely come back. The result? An aging population with no one to take over the local businesses, run the town council, or coach Little League.

Can It Be Stopped?

Not every town is doomed, though. Some communities are fighting back, using creative solutions to attract tourists or new residents. Local festivals, historic landmarks, and community efforts to breathe life into downtown areas have worked in some cases. But for many, it’s too little, too late.

Government support can help, but it’s not enough on its own. Some programs offer grants or incentives to struggling towns, but they don’t always reach those who need it most. And even when they do, it’s often a short-term fix for a long-term problem.

What Can You Do?

Look around your hometown. Do you see it happening there? If you want to keep your town alive, it starts with you. Support local businesses, attend town meetings, and get involved. If you don’t, you could wake up one day to find the place you call home is nothing more than a memory.

The “good old days” may feel like they’re slipping away, but it’s not too late to act. Don’t let your hometown become the next ghost town. Remember the town where neighbors looked out for each other, where life was slower and simpler. Those days don’t have to be gone forever. But if we don’t fight for our small towns, they will disappear—just like the one Jack and I once called home.
