CHICAGO, IL – Exciting news, Chicago! Amtrak is set to unveil a new rail service this autumn, bridging the gap between the Midwest and the Southeast United States. The Floridian, as the new line is dubbed, will make its debut on November 10, offering passengers a direct route from Chicago to Miami.

New Floridian Route Details

This innovative service is a strategic response to upcoming infrastructure work in New York. By merging portions of the existing Capitol Limited and Silver Star routes, Amtrak aims to maintain efficient service while accommodating the East River Tunnel Rehabilitation Project.

The complete journey on the Floridian will span approximately 47 hours, with key stops including Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Orlando, and Tampa. This new route effectively combines the Chicago to Washington, D.C. segment of the Capitol Limited with the Washington, D.C. to Miami portion of the Silver Star.

Passengers will have various accommodation options, from standard coach seating to private rooms. Those opting for Roomettes or bedrooms will enjoy perks such as dedicated attendant service, complimentary lounge access at major stations, included meals, and priority boarding.

All travelers will have access to cafe services, while a dining car will offer a more formal experience with table service and menu items ranging from vegan chili to steak.

Amtrak’s Infrastructure Plans

The introduction of the Floridian comes as Amtrak prepares for significant tunnel repairs in New York. The East River Tunnel Rehabilitation Project, slated for completion in 2027, will address damage from Superstorm Sandy and modernize the tunnel’s infrastructure.

It’s worth noting that the Silver Meteor line will continue its daily service between New York and Miami. Additionally, this route launch follows Amtrak’s recent simplification of its fare structure to two main options: “value” and “flex.”
