STONINGTON, CT – An Amtrak train bound for Boston struck a pickup truck in Connecticut Friday morning, prompting delays in the area for about two hours, but no injuries were reported.
Amtrak train 66 was traveling from Roanoke, Va., to Boston, Mass., when it struck a truck at a crossing in Stonington, Conn., at around 8:24 a.m.
According to the Stonington Police Department, the driver of the truck was stopped at the railroad crossing on Island Road while a train passed.
When the crossing gate lifted, he began to move through the crossing, but the gate quickly came back down for another oncoming train. Police said the driver was able to escape the vehicle in time.
Amtrak announce delays or complete stops for those traveling between New London and Kingston. Service was restored as of 10:30 a.m., the company said.
“As we resume normal operations, residual delays are anticipated,” Amtrak said. “We sincerely appreciate your continued patience and apologize for the delay.”
