The discovery was made nearly 23 feet beneath the Mount Anubis necropolis in Abydos. Here in Minnesota, several historians are trying to solve the baffling mystery of the unknown pharaoh.

A Glimpse into Antiquity

This extensive burial site comprises multiple chambers and features 16-foot vaults constructed from mud bricks. The entrance is adorned with depictions of the goddesses Isis and Nephthys, deities traditionally linked to funerary rites. Hieroglyphic inscriptions near the entrance were found but remain undeciphered, leaving the tomb’s ownership uncertain.

Clues and Conundrums

Despite the tomb’s grandeur, it has suffered from looting over the centuries, resulting in the absence of the mummy and sarcophagus. Scholars suggest that the tomb may belong to a ruler from the Abydos dynasty, with pharaohs Senaiib and Paentjeni emerging as potential candidates due to their known monuments but undiscovered burial sites. The tomb’s elaborate design hints that the Abydos dynasty might have wielded more influence than previously believed.

Recent Royal Discoveries

This finding marks the second significant royal tomb discovery in Egypt this year. In February, the long-lost tomb of King Thutmose II was located near the Valley of the Kings in Luxor. Thutmose II, the fourth pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty, ruled from approximately 1493 BC to 1479 BC and passed away at the age of 30.
