CHICAGO, IL – Businesses in downtown Chicago, Illinois are taking precautionary measures in anticipation of large-scale protests during the upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC). With thousands of anti-Israel demonstrators expected to converge on the city, many businesses in the Loop area have begun boarding up their storefronts to safeguard against potential vandalism.
The historic Garland Building, located at the intersection of Wabash and Washington Streets, is among the numerous establishments that have erected plywood barriers in preparation for the event.
This proactive approach is being mirrored by other businesses across the city’s main business district.
History of Unrest Spurs Caution
One business owner, Scott Schapiro, who runs the Syd Jerome menswear shop on Clark Street, has experienced multiple instances of looting in the past. Given this history, Schapiro is not taking any chances during the DNC.
His store will remain open during the convention, which runs from August 19 to August 22, but the protective boards will stay in place throughout the event. Schapiro has also indicated that he is prepared to close his shop temporarily if the situation escalates.
City Officials Prepare for Demonstrations
The city of Chicago has been bracing for the influx of protesters, particularly after anti-Israel groups successfully sued the city for the right to march near the United Center, where Democratic delegates are set to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential candidate.
The protest organizers have made it clear that they plan to mobilize thousands of participants from across several states.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has sought to reassure both residents and business owners, emphasizing the city’s readiness to manage the situation. He highlighted Chicago’s proven track record in hosting large-scale events, while acknowledging the potential for disruption.
Security Measures and Public Safety
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has also addressed concerns, drawing comparisons to the notorious 1968 DNC protests in Chicago, which were marked by significant violence.
He expressed confidence in the preparations made by city and state officials, including the allocation of sufficient space and protective measures to ensure public safety.
The DNC has been designated a “national security event” by the Secret Service, the highest level of security classification in the United States. Meanwhile, the FBI has stated that there are currently no specific or credible threats associated with the event.
As the convention approaches, Chicago’s business community and residents remain vigilant, hoping for a peaceful gathering while preparing for any potential challenges.
