HOUSTON, TX – What started as a seemingly ordinary morning for one Houston family quickly spiraled into a terrifying ordeal that no one could have predicted. Three violent criminals, disguised as DoorDash delivery drivers, stormed a home and left a police officer shot in the chaos. This chilling incident has left the community rattled and serves as a grim reminder that even the most trusted services can be exploited by those with evil intentions.

The Doorbell Rings… Then Terror Strikes

It was just before 10 a.m. when two men, dressed to deceive in DoorDash uniforms, knocked on the door of a quiet residence on Alderney Drive. Like any family might, a young woman—mother to two small children—answered the door, thinking it was just a mistaken delivery. But in seconds, her world turned upside down.

Before she could even process what was happening, the men forced their way inside. One of them had a gun hidden in a DoorDash bag, ready to unleash violence on the unsuspecting family. They had meticulously planned this invasion, preying on the trust people place in everyday services.

A Family Held Hostage

Inside, the criminals wasted no time in overpowering the mother, zip-tying her in front of her 1-year-old and 3-year-old children. Imagine the horror—unable to protect your babies, bound and powerless as strangers ransack your home.

“They zip-tied my daughter, and she had her 1-year-old and 3-year-old,” homeowner Ben Bates told KHOU, his voice trembling. “They didn’t do anything with the kids, but they had her walking them through the rooms, trying to find stuff to take.”

The thought of what could have happened is sickening. These men, armed and dangerous, had no regard for the innocent lives inside that home. The mother’s worst fears must have been racing through her mind as she led these criminals through her own house, not knowing if her children would be safe, or if any of them would survive this nightmare.

Police Respond, But Violence Escalates

Thankfully, a neighbor spotted something suspicious and called 911. Houston police officers arrived just in time to interrupt the invasion, but what happened next was like something out of a nightmare. One suspect, Michael Perez, was being taken into custody when suddenly his accomplice, Raymond Perez, appeared from another room and began firing at the officers.

Officer S. Durfee was shot in the leg during the ambush. The line between safety and chaos was blurred in an instant. This wasn’t just a home invasion anymore—it was a violent standoff, with bullets flying and lives hanging in the balance. Officer Durfee managed to return fire, but the gunman fled, turning the neighborhood into a potential warzone.

Suspects on the Loose, Fear in the Streets

As if the ordeal wasn’t horrifying enough, Raymond Perez took off on foot, leaving residents in a state of fear. An armed, dangerous man was now on the loose in their community—any home, any person could be his next target.

The terror didn’t stop there. A third suspect, waiting in a getaway vehicle, fled as well. Hours later, Houston SWAT officers tracked down Brian A. Garcia Chavez, but the fear lingered long after the suspects were caught. What if they hadn’t been? What if they had decided to invade another home? The sense of vulnerability was overwhelming.

A Sobering Conclusion

Officer Durfee was treated at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and, fortunately, is expected to recover. But this incident leaves behind a troubling question: how safe are we, really? Criminals are now exploiting trusted services like DoorDash, turning what seems like a normal delivery into a potential threat.

The suspects, now behind bars, are facing a list of charges, including aggravated assault and robbery. But for many in Houston, the damage has been done. A simple knock at the door has become a source of fear—who’s to say the next delivery driver isn’t hiding a weapon, ready to wreak havoc on another unsuspecting family?
