PUTNAM COUNTY, FL – Move over Billy Bob, looks like there’s a new “Bad Santa”! In an odd turn of events, a man dressed as Santa Claus was arrested on Christmas Eve in Putnam County, Florida for allegedly stalking and harassing his neighbor. The arrest has left many wondering how a holiday tradition could take such a dark turn.
Harassment Leads to Christmas Eve Arrest
Authorities responded to a call shortly before 9 p.m. on December 24 after a man reported being repeatedly harassed by his neighbor. The victim, who lives in Palatkaāabout 30 miles southwest of St. Augustineātold deputies that his neighbor had been stalking him for some time.
According to the victim, the harassment included writing “derogatory” messages on his driveway, making threatening statements, and shouting at him.
Arrested While Dressed as Santa
The suspect, Neil Champagne, 51, was taken into custody on Christmas Eve while wearing a full Santa suit. He was arrested on a charge of first-degree misdemeanor stalking and was booked into the Putnam County Jail. Champagneās bond was set at $2,500.
The sheriff’s office couldnāt help but comment on the peculiar nature of the incident: “Not exactly the best behavior for someone wearing a Santa suit.”
Ongoing Harassment and Law Enforcement’s Involvement
This wasn’t the first time deputies had been called to the home – the arrest is simply the latest chapter in a series of troubling events. For the last two months, the victim had been living with ongoing harassment, prompting repeated visits from law enforcement. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has spent significant time addressing this issue, with more than 60 responses to complaints related to the harassment.
With the arrest made, the legal process will now determine whether Florida’s “Bad Santa” will face further consequences. Now, please excuse me while I go make some sandwiches, kid.
