Pack Light or Pay Up: United Airlines Joins the Bag Fee Hike Trend

Chicago, Illinois – In a surprising move, United Airlines is bumping up its baggage fees, taking a cue from American Airlines and JetBlue. Travelers flying within North America will need to dig deeper into their pockets, as the cost for the first checked bag on a domestic flight jumps to $40, a $5 increase.
Planning to check a second bag? That’ll set you back $45 if you pay in advance online, or $50 if you wait until you’re at the airport.
This change kicks in for tickets bought starting February 24. United Airlines, based in Chicago, points out that it’s been four years since they last upped their bag fees. But don’t worry, if you’re a United Chase credit card holder, a MileagePlus Premier member, an active military member, or flying in a premium cabin, you can still check a bag for free.
In a bid to ease the pain, United is upgrading their mainline aircraft with bigger bins to fit more carry-on bags. This fee hike follows hot on the heels of similar moves by American Airlines, Alaska Air, and JetBlue.
A recent report shows that the top 20 global airlines raked in over $33 billion from bag fees last year, making it a crucial part of their income. These fees help airlines cover other costs, with last year’s earnings marking a 15% increase from 2022, accounting for about 4.1% of global airline revenue.
