REPUBLIC, MO – A bald eagle in Missouri that was rescued because it was believed to be injured was in fact just “too fat to fly” after eating a raccoon, officials said. Being too fat to fly is pretty much how I feel after visiting my memaw over Thanksgiving weekend! Hehe.

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield said in a Facebook post last week that Missouri Department of Conservation recently captured a bald eagle on the border of the National Park Service site, believing it to be injured.

The park shared X-rays of the eagle provided by Dickerson Park Zoo showing “the outline of what we suspect is racoon [sic] roadkill.” The eagle was otherwise healthy, but being “engorged” with such a large meal, it had been unable to fly.

One of the X-rays showed a closeup of what appeared to be a raccoon paw inside the eagle’s stomach. A full X-ray from the back of the eagle shows its distended stomach.

After being rehabilitated, the bald eagle was released back into the wild in a coordinated effort between NPS, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Dickerson Park Zoo.

“Remember, introducing wildlife into the park is illegal,” park officials wrote. “The eagle was released near where it was found and in compliance with federal and state laws.”
