FORT WAYNE, IN – In the annals of Indiana‘s history, there exists a captivating creature that has enthralled generations: the Beast of Busco. This mythical monster, said to be a colossal snapping turtle of unprecedented size, has left an indelible mark on the town of Churubusco and its surrounding areas. The Busco Beast is a paranormal puzzler that has kept folks in the Hoosier State scratching their heads of centuries.
😲 Eyewitness Accounts: A Century of Sightings
The origins of the Beast of Busco can be traced back to 1898 when Oscar Fulk, a local farmer, claimed to have encountered a gigantic turtle residing in the seven-acre lake on his property. Although Fulk initially shared his story, he eventually chose to let the matter rest.
It wasn’t until July 1948, half a century later, that the legend of the Beast of Busco truly took hold. Ora Blue and Charley Wilson, two residents of Churubusco, reported spotting an enormous turtle weighing an estimated 500 pounds while fishing in the same lake, now known as Fulk Lake. Their account was corroborated by the current landowner, Gale Harris, and other witnesses, igniting a frenzy of curiosity and speculation.

🌎 A National Sensation: The Hunt Begins
In early 1949, the story of the Beast of Busco caught the attention of a United Press International (UPI) reporter from Fort Wayne, who promptly sent the story out on the wire services. The turtle’s existence quickly became a national sensation, drawing curious crowds and sightseers to Harris’ land.
The influx of visitors was so significant that state police had to be called in to manage traffic control. Skepticism regarding the turtle’s existence prompted Harris to undertake several attempts to capture the elusive creature, including a daring effort to drain the lake with the assistance of Orville Bright and Kenneth Leitch.
However, despite their valiant efforts, the dam they constructed broke when the lake was nearly empty, and the Beast of Busco, affectionately named “Oscar” after the original farm owner, remained at large.
🔍 Investigations and Media Frenzy
The hunt for the Beast of Busco attracted attention from various quarters. In March 1949, an attempt to deploy a deep-sea diver into the pond was thwarted by the delivery of incorrect equipment to the Harris farm.
The legend also caught the eye of Life Magazine, which dispatched photographer Mike Shea to document the search. Although Shea captured 299 photographs at the site, none were deemed suitable for publication, adding to the mystery surrounding the elusive creature.
