MINNEAPOLIS, MN – If you’re tired of sitting in endless traffic on 394 to 94 or dreaming of leaving Minneapolis for a city with better car-free commuting options, you’re not alone. Whether it’s the appeal of reliable public transit or more bike-friendly streets, Lyft’s latest data has highlighted the best U.S. cities for ditching your car and embracing greener, more efficient commutes.

Sure, the Twin Cities are pretty good for car-free commuting, but things could be better. And – according to Lyft’s data – the following list of 10 cities are best.

Top Cities Leading the Charge

Lyft’s recent report highlights New York City as the top U.S. city for car-free commuting. Despite its reputation for bumper-to-bumper traffic, the Big Apple’s extensive public transportation network, along with bike lanes and carpooling options, makes it the leader in sustainable commuting.

From seasoned subway riders to cyclists weaving through morning traffic, New Yorkers have more options than ever to make their commute as clean as possible.

Close behind are Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., all known for their reliable and extensive public transit systems. Boston, in particular, stands out for its high number of pedestrians, while San Francisco takes the crown for being the most bike-friendly.

Other cities that made the list include Seattle, Philadelphia, and Chicago, each offering a range of public transit options that cut down on car usage. Even cities like Portland and Denver are making strides, showing that Western cities are just as dedicated to offering greener commuting alternatives.

Rounding out the list is Los Angeles, where despite its car-centric reputation, an increasing number of commuters are choosing bikes, buses, and trains to get around.

Lyft’s Price Lock and the Push for Predictable Commutes

Lyft’s data reveal that 35% of its users are commuters, many of whom expressed frustration with the unpredictability of surge pricing during rush hours.

In response, Lyft has launched a new “price lock” feature, designed to alleviate the stress of fluctuating fares. For $2.99 per month, commuters can lock in the price of their regular rides, ensuring a predictable cost for their daily trips to work.

This move comes at a time when four out of five workers still commute in-person, despite the increasing prevalence of remote work. As more people return to their offices, the desire for more sustainable and cost-effective commuting options has grown.

Lyft’s report underscores the importance of public transportation and car-free commutes, not just for reducing traffic congestion but also for lowering carbon footprints.
