Maple Grove, MN – In a heartwarming display of determination and generosity, two cousins from Minnesota, Karina Schindler and Britta Swanson, are gearing up for an incredible 1,600-mile bike ride from their home state to the Atlantic shores of Maine. Their mission? To raise funds for World Bicycle Relief, a nonprofit organization that provides bicycles to low-income communities around the world.
A Summer Adventure with a Purpose
When asked about their motivation behind this ambitious undertaking, Schindler quipped to reporters, “You know, it was going to be a boring summer anyway. Might as well just find something to fill the days.”
But their journey is far from a mere whim. The cousins have set a lofty goal of raising $30,000 for World Bicycle Relief. “Thirty-thousand seems like, that’s like, that’s a lot of money,” Swanson admitted to reporters. “But might as well shoot for it!”
The Power of a Bicycle
The funds raised by Schindler and Swanson will go towards providing 180 life-changing bicycles to communities in need. “It just impacts the entire community as well. So it’s more than just 180 people being helped, it’s 180 communities being helped all over the world,” Schindler explained. The cousins understand that a bicycle is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a tool that can empower individuals and transform lives.
Honoring a Legacy
The inspiration for this incredible journey stems from the cousins’ late grandfather, Richard Schindler, an avid biker who embarked on his own cross-country bicycle trip nearly 13 years ago. Along with a group of friends, Richard rode from Portland, Oregon, to Portland, Maine, raising money for the Hormel Institute of Austin. “He was such a cool person, and we are so excited to honor him through this as well,” Karina Schindler shared with reporters.
No Excuses, Just Determination
Before they hit the road, the cousins have a few hurdles to overcome, including Swanson’s upcoming graduation from the University of Minnesota Duluth. But they refuse to let anything stand in their way. “No time like the present, I guess,” Swanson said in a recent interview. “You know, you can always make excuses for why things don’t work out.”
The Finish Line and Beyond
As they pedal their way across the country, Schindler and Swanson will be fueled by the knowledge that their efforts will have a lasting impact on countless lives. “Knowing that it’s not just individuals, but it’s also communities and families,” Swanson reflected in her interview with reporters. And when they finally reach the Atlantic Ocean, Karina Schindler can already picture the moment: “As soon as we hit the Atlantic Ocean, it’s going to be like, ‘Wow, we did something really cool.'”
