CHICAGO, IL – Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan’s tea shop, Madame ZuZu’s in Chicago, was the scene of a frightening incident Wednesday when a car crashed through the café’s front window, injuring his mother-in-law. The accident occurred just before noon at the popular tea shop on First Street, where patrons and staff were left stunned by the unexpected event.
Injury and Close Call for Family Members
The crash injured Corgan’s mother-in-law, Jenny, who was spending a quiet lunch with her grandson, Augustus, when the accident unfolded.
Sharing the distressing news on Instagram, Corgan’s wife and co-owner of the shop, Chloe Mendel, detailed the shocking moment: “This afternoon at Madame ZuZu’s, a car (in circumstances which remain under investigation) drove over the curb and into Madame ZuZu’s, crashing through the window and sadly injuring one person — my mother, Jenny; who was spending the day and lunching with my son Augustus.” Mendel expressed relief that Augustus “was able to leap out of the way and was not injured.”
Ongoing Investigation into the Cause
Authorities have not yet disclosed a cause for the crash, though they indicated early findings suggest it was an accident. Both the driver and Corgan’s mother-in-law were taken to the hospital for treatment, and there has been no word on their condition as of Thursday morning. City officials have not released any additional information as the investigation continues.
Gratitude and Temporary Closure
Mendel expressed deep gratitude to Highland Park and Deerfield first responders for their swift action and care, noting, “Our family is grateful for the swift assistance of the Highland Park and Deerfield first responders.” Due to the damage, Madame ZuZu’s will be “closed until further notice,” Mendel confirmed, as the family takes time to assess and repair.
A Community Favorite Put on Hold
Madame ZuZu’s, known for blending tea, art, and live music, has become a cherished part of the Highland Park community. Locals and fans alike will feel the shop’s absence in the coming days, though supporters are already rallying behind the Corgan family, eager for the tea shop’s return.
