Shakopee, Minnesota – In a heartwarming reunion with nature, the Shakopee Sioux community in Minnesota has welcomed a special group of guests – 10 bison! These majestic creatures have finally made their way back to their ancestral homeland after more than a century.
For the Shakopee tribe, bison hold a special place in their hearts. They’ve been a vital part of their history, providing food, medicine, and materials for generations. To them, bison are not just animals; they are cherished relatives.
Unfortunately, the bison disappeared from this area long ago due to historical events. But the Shakopee community was determined to bring them back. A dedicated workgroup of two dozen members spent two years planning and figuring out how to make it happen.

Their dream became a reality when another tribe from South Dakota generously gifted them with 10 bison. These bison are currently grazing behind a protective enclosure, allowing them to get acclimated to their new home.
