NORTH BRANFORD, CT – A trio of bison who escaped their pasture in Connecticut in the early hours Sunday returned home on their own on Tuesday night, with a newborn in tow, officials said.

The three adult bison — mom, dad and a friend — escaped from the 3B Ranch in North Branford by breaking through a wire fence enclosing their pasture on Sunday night.

Officers with the Guilford Police Department spotted one in the middle of the road late at night in the rain, and couldn’t believe what they were seeing.

“Sometimes the midnight shift plays tricks on you and you have to rub your eyes to make sure you are seeing what your brain is telling you it sees out of the raining, dark shadows,” the police department wrote alongside a photo, asking the community, “who’s missing their buffalo?”

In an update later on Sunday in the daylight, police said 3B Ranch employees were out looking for three bison, and warned community members to be on the lookout.

On Wednesday, police said the buffalo had returned home of their own volition on Tuesday night — with an extra surprise. A newborn bison calf joined them.

“These fluffernators had a few eventful days out, meeting and greeting the locals, learning about the rules of the road (everyone knows buffalo have the right of way at every intersection now), and finally they decided that it was time to take a nap in the comforts of their own pasture,” police wrote alongside a photo.

“Sounds like Mama wanted to have her last baby-moon before the Super Moon,” police said.

“What we’ve been kind of saying was that the bison went on maternity leave,” Amanda Maresca, whose family owns 3B Ranch, told CT Insider. She said she hopes to involve the public in choosing a name for the new bison calf.
