SAN DIEGO, CA – The mysterious California disappearance of Hawaii-based photographer Hannah Kobayashi has taken a new turn. Authorities confirmed that surveillance footage shows her crossing the US-Mexico border on foot, just days after her arrival at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This new development, along with her family’s concerns, has raised more questions about her whereabouts and safety.

Timeline of Events: Hannah’s Journey and Disappearance

Kobayashi, 30, landed at LAX on November 8, planning to connect to a flight to New York City. However, she missed her flight, and the next day, November 9, was the last time anyone had contact with her. Family members became increasingly worried when they lost touch, and a missing person’s report was filed on November 11.

Surveillance footage later revealed Kobayashi in and around the Los Angeles area between November 8 and 12, including an unsettling image of her crossing the US-Mexico border on November 12 near Tijuana. The footage, captured by Customs and Border Protection, showed her walking alone, carrying her luggage, and appearing unharmed. The crossing took place around 12:15 p.m.

LAPD’s Official Statement

During a press briefing, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell addressed the case, confirming that Kobayashi’s situation has been classified as a “voluntary missing person” case. “She was alone, with her luggage and appeared unharmed,” McDonnell said, emphasizing that there was no evidence of foul play or any involvement in sex trafficking.

McDonnell added that investigators believed Kobayashi had intentionally discarded her phone after arriving at LAX, a decision that could have complicated efforts to track her movements. He also noted that, before departing from Maui, Kobayashi had expressed a desire to disconnect from modern technology.

“Our priority is ensuring Ms. Kobayashi’s safety and well-being and we urge Ms. Kobayashi to contact her family, law enforcement or personnel at the US Embassy to let us know that she is safe,” McDonnell said.

Family’s Concerns and Disagreement with Authorities

While authorities assert that Kobayashi’s disappearance is voluntary, her family has expressed significant concern over the circumstances. In a statement, her sister, Sydni Kobayashi, disagreed with the claim that Hannah missed her flight intentionally. “Based on information, surveillance footage reviewed and information shared with us, these are the facts known to my mother and I: It does not appear that Hannah intentionally missed her flight,” she said.

The Kobayashi family has been vocal about the confusion surrounding key details of the case. Sydni also mentioned the lack of communication on important developments, which has left the family feeling excluded. Despite the uncertainty, they remain hopeful. “However, we do remain hopeful and optimistic that the Los Angeles Police Department is doing everything in their power to assist us in locating Hannah,” she added.

A Tragic Turn: Family Loss Amid the Search

The investigation took another heartbreaking turn on November 24, when Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, was found dead in a parking lot near LAX. Authorities later confirmed his death as a suicide. His passing added emotional weight to an already distressing situation, with family members struggling to cope with the loss while continuing their search for Hannah.

Police Efforts and International Collaboration

The LAPD has continued to take the case seriously. Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton assured the public that significant resources were being dedicated to the investigation. This included a recent trip to the US-Mexico border, where LAPD officials collaborated with Mexican authorities in an effort to locate Kobayashi.

“We expended a lot of resources to include a trip this past weekend to the US-Mexico to collaborate with our partners there,” Hamilton said.
