SAN DIEGO, CA – Halloween has sparked yet another controversy this year as college students from San Diego, California face backlash for an offensive costume choice that has outraged social media users. A recent TikTok video posted by user “Allegra’s Diary” showed two partygoers dressed as rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs—one in blackface—causing outrage across platforms like X and TikTok.

Viral Video Draws Swift Outrage

The video, originally posted with the caption “how the group chat dressed for Halloween,” quickly went viral before the account was deleted. But it was too late—millions had already seen the clip. The footage showed a white man dressed in a black blazer, red bowtie, and Adidas sneakers, with his skin darkened in a crude attempt to mimic Combs.

Even more disgusting? His blonde partner wore a pink hat and shirt labeled “Johnson’s Baby” and carried a bottle of baby oil, a disturbing reference to the recent federal investigation into Combs. Authorities allegedly found 1,000 bottles of lubricant at the rapper’s home, which some claim was laced with a substance linked to sexual assault.

Social Media Backlash

Reaction on social media was swift and harsh. Many users expressed anger, criticizing the costume for being both offensive and poorly executed. Some complained the portrayal lacked effort, arguing that the red bowtie and blackface failed to resemble Combs in any meaningful way.

“It’s more than just offensive,” one user posted. “It’s lazy.” Others lamented the absence of any friends who could have stopped the couple from wearing such an inappropriate costume.

As the clip spread, calls for accountability grew louder. Some users shared San Diego State University’s contact information, encouraging others to report the incident, as the party’s host was believed to be connected to the school.

University Responds to the Incident

San Diego State University confirmed to reporters it is investigating the incident. School officials said they are working to identify the people involved and verify if any students or affiliates were present.

They emphasized that blackface and any attempt to make light of sexual misconduct are unacceptable within their community.

Recurring Issue of Blackface in Halloween Costumes

This is far from the first time blackface has surfaced as a troubling trend during Halloween.

Earlier this month, GOP Congressman Mike Lawler apologized when photos emerged of him wearing blackface as Michael Jackson at a past Halloween party. Despite repeated controversies, the issue persists, raising questions about why such costumes continue to appear year after year.

Moving Forward: A Need for Accountability

The growing backlash against insensitive costumes highlights the need for greater cultural awareness. While public outrage may temporarily discourage these stunts, whether deeper lessons are being learned remains to be seen. Halloween seems to come with the same question every year: How much longer will people push boundaries without understanding the damage they cause?
