OLD SAYBROOK, CT – Two people were still missing early Tuesday after a speeding boat crashed into a jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River in Old Saybrook Monday night, officials said.
One person was confirmed dead, and six others were transported to the hospital after multiple agencies including fire departments, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Environmental Conservation (EnCon) Police, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
First responders were dispatched to the marina in Old Saybrook, about 30 miles east of New Haven, at around 9:15 p.m. Monday after the crash was reported. Officials believe the single-engine boat may have been traveling from nearby Block Island, but its unclear where it was headed.
A total of nine people were on board the boat. Sea Tow was the first to arrive at the scene, and pulled five women and one man from the water. They were hospitalized, at least one of them in critical condition. One adult male was found by rescuers and pronounced dead at the scene.
Crews suspended the search in the early hours Tuesday, but resumed the recovery operation for the two missing boaters at 7 a.m., officials said.
The Old Saybrook Fire Department is leading the investigation.
