MIAMI, FL – The U.S. Coast Guard and local sheriff’s deputies rescued two people after their boat caught fire off the coast of Florida on Thursday, officials said.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami received a report via VHF radio channel 16 at around 1:25 p.m. Thursday that a 41-foot cabin cruiser was taking on water after the vessel caught fire about 11 miles east of Dania Beach.

Coast Guard Cutter Bernard C. Webber’s small boat rescue crew and a Coast Guard Auxiliary air crew were dispatched to the scene, while a Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue boat responded to extinguish the blaze.

The Webber’s small boat crew found two people on a life raft and brought them aboard. They were unharmed, and transferred to sheriff’s deputies, who brought them ashore.

“This rescue emphasizes the importance of using a VHF radio on channel 16 if you are distress,” Petty Officer First Class Dustin Breeden, a Coast Guard Sector Miami watchstander, said in a statement.

“Thanks to our prompt notification, we were able to get assets on scene and save lives.”
