A harrowing ordeal leaves boaters stranded and desperate on a remote island overnight!

GULFPORT, MS – Two boaters were rescued Monday after their boat was found adrift, and they were left stranded on an island off the coast of Mississippi overnight, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a call at around 10 a.m. Monday from a Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew that spotted a 14-foot aluminum vessel with camouflage exterior adrift in the area of Horn Island.

A boat crew was launched from Coast Guard Station Pascagoula to search the vessel, which they located and boarded. The crew found a cooler with ice still in it, and a wallet that contained an identification card.

Using the information on the ID, which belonged to the vessel’s owner, the Coast Guard was able to make contact with family members, who reported the owner and an acquaintance were stranded on Horn Island overnight.

An airborne Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew was diverted to Horn Island to locate the missing boaters.

A video shared by the Coast Guard shows the helicopter crew locating the two boaters on the beach at Horn Island.

The helicopter landed on the beach to pick up the boaters, then transported them to Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport in Gulfport, Miss. No injuries were reported.
