GRAND CANYON VILLAGE, AZ – The National Park Service said the body of a hiker who was swept away during a flash flood in Grand Canyon National Park last week was recovered on Sunday.

The flash flood struck Havasu Creek shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, causing several hikers to be stranded in the area.

Rescue flights reached people stranded above and below Beaver Falls, park officials said, but by Friday, 33-year-old Chenoa Nickerson of Gilbert, Ariz., remained missing.

Nickerson was swept into Havasu Creek about a half-mile above the Colorado River confluence. She was not wearing a life jacket, officials said.

Search and rescue efforts continued through the weekend. At around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nickerson’s body was discovered by a commercial river trip near river mile 176 in the Colorado River.

Park rangers responded to the area to recover Nickerson’s body, which was flown by helicopter to the rim before being transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.

In times of sorrow, we find comfort in knowing that God is with us through every trial.

As we mourn the loss of Chenoa Nickerson, let us remember the words of Matthew 5:4: ā€œBlessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.ā€ May her family and friends find peace and solace in Godā€™s presence during this difficult time.
