CAMBRIDGE, MA – A baby boy and his father were rescued from the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass., Monday morning by a Boston Duck Tours boat that happened to be in the right place at the right time, officials said.

The Cambridge Fire Department confirmed companies responded to the Charles River at 40 Land Boulevard, in the area of the harbor near the Museum of Science and Hayden Planetarium.

The fire department said an adult and child were rescued from the water by the Boston Duck Tours boat.

According to Massachusetts State Police, troopers responded to a report of a child under age 2 falling into the river near the rear of the Royal Sonesta Hotel at around 9:30 a.m.

The boy had fallen into the water after squeezing through a railing, and the boy’s father jumped in after him.

Both the boy and his father were subsequently pulled to safety aboard a passing Boston Duck Tour boat operated by Mike Rosario and Kevin O’Neill, who were on a training run when they spotted them in the water.

The boy and his father were transferred to shore and evaluated by EMS. The boy was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, officials said.

Local photographer Dominic Demasi told Boston 25 News he heard screaming when it happened.

“Initially I thought it was a dog. I took my camera, I looked closer, and there happened to be a baby in the water, actually. The father jumped right in. He was swimming with the baby for five or 10 minutes. They then called a Duck Boat over,” Demasi told the outlet.

“They come out of the Charles right here and they do their tours. So, they just happened to be in the area at the right time I guess. Right place, right time,” Demasi said.

“It definitely scared me. I could hear them screaming…It’s good it wasn’t a long time. It wasn’t cold out.”
