FLAGSTAFF, AZ – An 8-year-old boy who went missing when he became separated from his family at an Arizona cave on Wednesday was found safe, authorities said Thursday.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and a search-and-rescue unit responded to a report of a missing child at the Lava River Cave northwest of Flagstaff at around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Tzion Maron, 8, was last seen on foot near the cave entrance before he became separated from his family. The sheriff’s office said early Thursday that teams searched “through the rainy night” but had not located the boy.
Later on Thursday, the sheriff’s office said the boy was found safe. No further details on the boy’s condition or the circumstances of his disappearance were provided.
The Lava River Cave is a mile-long lava tube cave in the Coconino National Forest, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Forest officials advise visitors to dress warmly while visiting the cave, which stays as cool as 42 degrees even in the summer.
