CONIFER, CO – A 17-year-old boy was shot in the face after approaching a home to ask permission to take homecoming photos. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Conifer, Colorado, about 35 miles southwest of Denver.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of trespassers around 4:15 p.m. on Pleasant Park Road. When deputies arrived, they found the boy bleeding heavily from his face. His friend was applying pressure to the wound with a t-shirt.
Incident Details
According to authorities, the teens had driven to the property intending to ask the homeowner if they could use the location for homecoming photos. After parking outside the gate, they hopped the fence and walked up the driveway.
The teens attempted to find the homeowner but were unsuccessful. They returned to their car and began writing a note to leave behind.
“While they were doing this, a man they had never seen before pulled up next to them, exited the truck he was driving, and fired a round through the windshield, striking the 17-year-old driver in the face,” the sheriff’s office said. Brent Metz, 38, was the man who allegedly fired the shot.
The homeowner was not at the residence during the incident but had called 911 to report the teens as trespassers. The homeowner also contacted Metz, her boyfriend. Metz is a council member in the nearby town of Mountain View, according to reports.
Charges Filed
Metz was arrested at the scene and has been charged with first-degree assault, felony menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm, and reckless endangerment.
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told the outlet that the teen’s intent did not appear to be “malicious or criminal.” The boy who was shot is currently recovering from his injuries.
