The February accident near Spring Valley, Minnesota, highlights the dangers of texting while driving, a factor investigators say played a central role in the incident.
The crash occurred on February 16, when Edgarâs vehicle collided with an Amish buggy, sending it and its occupants into a ditch. Edgar fled the scene without checking on the family or calling for help. According to Fillmore County court records, Edgarâs phone records, obtained through a search warrant, revealed that she had been texting around the time of the crash.
Injuries to Young Victims and Their Parents
The collision left nine family members hurt, including seven children and their parents. The injuries ranged in severity. A 12-year-old child suffered a fractured skull, a three-year-old boy broke his arm, and a one-year-old had a facial fracture. The remaining victims sustained only minor cuts and bruises, according to official charges.
Edgar Stopped by Police but Released
The court records further reveal that shortly after the accident, Fillmore County deputies stopped Edgar for a traffic violation. She was reportedly driving with “significant damage and a broken headlight.”
Despite the apparent signs of recent collision, deputies issued her a warning and let her go, mistakenly believing another vehicle at the crash scene was responsible.
