NEW YORK, NY – A bitter rivalry between Bronx towing companies has escalated into violence, leaving one person dead and others injured. Now, a local operator faces serious federal charges, including racketeering and murder, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
Christian Lugo, also known as “Coco,” allegedly led a criminal operation that took control of Certified Auto, a Bronx-based towing and auto repair business. Prosecutors claim Lugo used intimidation, fraud, and violence to dominate the local towing scene.
A Turf War with Deadly Consequences
Prosecutors say Lugo didn’t just run Certified Auto—he weaponized it. Along with his co-conspirators, Lugo allegedly engaged in wire, mail, and insurance fraud to enrich his operation. His criminal network, according to the U.S. Attorney, “took over and corrupted” Certified Auto, using it to control the towing and auto repair industry in their territory.
The rivalry between Lugo’s crew and other tow companies in the Bronx boiled over into violence. On February 7, 2022, Lugo allegedly ordered a Certified Auto employee to target members of a rival towing business. The attack resulted in the death of Gloria Ortiz, a bystander, and left two others injured.
“As alleged, Christian Lugo corrupted a tow truck and auto repair business in the Bronx and ran that enterprise by engaging in rampant fraud and serious acts of violence,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams in a statement. “Lugo’s alleged rivalry with other tow truck companies culminated in him allegedly ordering another member of his enterprise to shoot at rivals, which resulted in the murder of Gloria Ortiz.”
Serious Charges and Severe Penalties
The legal consequences Lugo faces are steep. If convicted of racketeering conspiracy, he could receive a life sentence. The murder charge connected to racketeering carries either a mandatory life sentence or the possibility of the death penalty. Lugo also faces:
- 10 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering
- 20 years for attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon
- At least 10 years for each firearms charge, which will run consecutively with other sentences
A Community on Edge
This case sheds light on the dangers hiding beneath the surface of competitive industries like towing. What should be a straightforward business can sometimes spiral into criminal operations fueled by greed and violence. The Bronx community now mourns the loss of Gloria Ortiz, an innocent victim caught in a deadly power struggle.
As the legal process unfolds, the community is left grappling with how a local business intended to serve the public could turn into a front for criminal activities. This tragedy underscores the importance of keeping greed and intimidation in check—before more lives are lost.
