Chicago, Illinois – Get ready to fall in love with the newest additions to Brookfield Zoo Chicago! Four adorable meerkat pups, two males and two females, were born on February 11 to proud parents Naomi and Tebogo. These tiny bundles of joy are now nearly two months old and are starting to explore their habitat at the Zoo’s Desert’s Edge. Make plans to visit these curious cuties, Chicago!
A Successful Breeding Recommendation
Naomi, who is 2½ years old, and Tebogo, who is three, arrived at the Zoo in April 2023 as part of a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP). These programs work to keep animal populations in North American zoos and aquariums healthy and thriving. This is the first successful meerkat birth at Brookfield Zoo Chicago since 2010, and everyone is thrilled!
Growing Up Meerkat-Style
Baby meerkats, or pups, are born with very little fur and their eyes closed. Around two weeks old, they start to open their eyes and take in the world around them. By nine weeks old, they are usually weaned, but they may start nibbling on solid food before that. Imagine how cute it must be to watch these little ones learn and grow!
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Meerkats are small mammals that come from the western parts of southern Africa, like Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. They are known for their teamwork and how they take turns keeping an eye out for any danger while the others search for food. When a meerkat is on guard duty, it stands up tall on a high spot, looking all around and even up at the sky. It’s like they have their own little security system!
