SAN CLEMENTE, CA – Border Patrol agents disrupted a significant drug smuggling attempt on Interstate 5 in California, uncovering a hidden cache of deadly narcotics valued at nearly $300,000. The dramatic operation unfolded on January 10 near San Clemente and showcases the ongoing battle against drug trafficking along one of the busiest routes in the country.

Suspicious Vehicle Stopped by Alert Agents

At approximately 10:30 a.m., agents patrolling I-5 near the Basilone Road exit south of San Clemente noticed a vehicle exhibiting suspicious behavior. The driver’s demeanor and movements raised red flags, prompting agents to initiate a traffic stop.

A K-9 unit was quickly deployed to the scene. The highly trained dog signaled the presence of narcotics, triggering a detailed search of the vehicle.

Agents discovered multiple packages concealed in the vehicle’s natural voids—a tactic commonly used by drug traffickers to evade detection.
