ORANGE COUNTY, CA – An Orange County family had an unexpected surprise Monday morning when their dog chased what appeared to be a cat up a tree. But upon closer inspection, they realized the animal wasn’t a regular domestic cat—it was a California mountain lion.
This surprising encounter unfolded near the intersection of Irvine Boulevard and Holt Avenue in Tustin, prompting a swift response from local authorities. The family’s dog had triggered a chase, sending the mountain lion up into the branches of a tree. While the situation was startling, the family was quick to notice something was off about their furry friend’s “catch.”
Authorities Spring Into Action
Upon realizing the animal was a mountain lion, the Tustin Police Department reached out to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, along with the Orange County Fire Authority. Officials worked together to safely manage the rescue operation.
A Facebook post from the Tustin Police Department shared the story with the public, including photos of the young male mountain lion perched about 20 feet high in the tree. As the animal remained calm, first responders ensured the safety of both the public and the wildlife.
“For the safety of the animal and first responders, the lion was tranquilized and removed from the tree,” the fire department said in a post on X. The tranquilization allowed responders to safely bring the mountain lion to the ground without harming it or putting anyone in danger.
Safely Releasing the Mountain Lion
Once safely on the ground, biologists from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife provided medical care and prepared the mountain lion for transport. The animal was first taken to a processing center before being relocated far from urban areas to prevent any further incidents.
The mountain lion was eventually released into the Cleveland National Forest, where it could rejoin its natural habitat. According to fire officials, “Today’s incident is also a reminder that when it comes to wildlife, giving them their space and calling the appropriate authorities is best for their safety and ours.”
This case highlights the importance of handling wildlife encounters with care, ensuring that both humans and animals are safe during such surprising incidents.
