But for three Los Angeles County firefighters, a routine call turned hazardous as they raced up Californiaās State Road 39 toward a cliffside rescue in the San Gabriel Mountains. Their engine, maneuvering a winding mountain route, lost control and overturnedāshifting their role from rescuers to those needing assistance.
The Los Angeles County Fire Departmentās Engine 32 was dispatched Sunday evening to aid in a cliff rescue near the San Gabriel Reservoir. Around 5:39 p.m., while navigating State Road 39, the truckās driver veered slightly off the narrow road. In an attempt to correct course, the engine fishtailed, ultimately flipping onto its side. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
All three firefighters on board sustained minor injuries. They were promptly taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and are expected to recover fully.
California Highway Patrol officials closed both directions of State Road 39 immediately following the accident. The closure, aimed at ensuring the safety of the firefighters and road crew handling the situation, lasted until the road was cleared for travel shortly before 10:30 p.m.
Navigating the mountainous terrain of the San Gabriels is a challenge that firefighters regularly face, but such missions carry an extra layer of risk when time-sensitive rescues require swift response over narrow roads.
