SACRAMENTO, CA – The mother of a teen boy who went missing from a family camping trip in Wheatland, California this week while attempting an unspecified “challenge” said after he was found that she hopes he’s “done with challenges like this.”

The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department said 16-year-old Mikhael Nazorov was last seen at Camp Far West Lake at around 7 p.m. Tuesday when he and his older sister got separated while walking to the far side of the lake.

The boy’s family “immediately contacted authorities,” and members of the sheriff’s department’s Search and Rescue teams responded to the scene.

In an update Wednesday, the sheriff’s department said Nazorov was “located alive and well.” He was found along the lake about five miles from where he started, about 18 hours after he went missing.

“I wanted to do a challenge where you have to walk to the other side,” the teen told KCRA 3. “When I got to the other side, I decided to walk around the whole lake and that turned out bad.”

When he saw search teams on the lake, he jumped into the water to get their attention and tried swimming to them, which is how he was eventually found, he said.

“I had a feeling he was doing a challenge because of the past challenges he’s done,” Lyudmila Nazorov, the boy’s mother, told the outlet. “I’m so glad it turned out to be OK. I hope we’re done with challenges like this.”

“Fortunately, this story has a happy ending,” the sheriff’s department said.
