Red Wing, Minnesota – The Land of 10,000 Bakes Lakes made history last year by becoming the 23rd state to legalize recreational cannabis use. And now, the Prairie Island Indian Community (PIIC) is ready to make some history of their own with the launch of their brand-new cannabis venture, Island Peži in Red Wing, Minnesota.
What does “Peži” mean, you ask? It’s the word for “grass” in the Dakota language. Pretty fitting for a cannabis dispensary, don’t you think? Hehe. 😉
A Boost to the Local Economy
The Tribal Council President, Grant Johnson, is thrilled about this new venture. He believes that Island Peži will help diversify the Tribe’s economy and strengthen their long-term financial sovereignty. In other words, it’s a win-win situation for everyone involved!
Location, Location, Location
So, where exactly will this new dispensary be located? Drumroll, please… 🥁 Island Peži will be situated right next to Dakota Station, the Tribe’s convenience store and gas station on Prairie Island. And guess what? It’s just a stone’s throw away from the famous Treasure Island Resort and Casino in southern Minnesota.
The Tribe’s Got It Under Control
Now, you might be wondering about the legal aspects of this new venture. Well, the PIIC has got it all figured out. They’ve set up their own Cannabis Regulatory Commission to oversee all the cannabis business activity within their jurisdiction. It’s like having their own little government, making sure everything runs smoothly and legally.
Not the First, But Definitely the Closest
While Island Peži won’t be the first tribal dispensary in Minnesota (that honor goes to the Red Lake Nation and White Earth Nation in the north), it will be the closest one to the Twin Cities. Something tells me folks in our hometown of Winona, Minnesota will gladly make the drive an hour north too! LOL.

According to state law, there should be one dispensary for every 12,500 people in Minnesota. To meet this requirement, researchers discovered that the state would need to open close to 400 cannabis retail stores. With the opening of Island Peži, the PIIC is doing its part to help meet this demand and ensure that cannabis is accessible to those who need it.
