ST. PAUL, MN – A 20-year-old man from St. Paul tragically drowned on Saturday while visiting a state park in northern Minnesota, according to a report from the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. when a man called 911 from Savanah Portage State Park, where he was camping with family members. He reported that his cousin, Htoo Shwe, had gone underwater in Wolf Lake after their canoe capsized.
Shwe and his cousin were in the canoe when it overturned, throwing both of them into the water. While the 911 caller managed to swim to shore, Shwe reportedly panicked and disappeared beneath the surface.
Authorities noted that neither of the men was wearing a life jacket at the time. When officers arrived, it took about 20 minutes to recover Shwe’s body from the lake.
Shwe’s cause of death was confirmed as freshwater drowning, per the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.
In times of tragedy, we find comfort in God’s presence, knowing He is near to those who call on Him in truth. As we mourn the loss of Htoo Shwe, let us remember the words of Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
May this verse remind us that even in our darkest moments, we can turn to God for strength and peace. Use the comments section below to leave a word of encouragement to the families affected by this tragic event!
