LAREDO, TX – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers made a massive drug bust in Laredo, Texas, over the weekend, seizing narcotics worth more than $6.3 million. The two separate incidents took place at the World Trade Bridge, with drugs concealed in shipments of everyday goods.
Massive Meth Seizure in Freightliner
The first seizure occurred on Friday when a CBP officer referred a 2022 Freightliner for secondary inspection.
The truck was hauling a shipment of roof sealant buckets, but using a non-intrusive inspection system and canines, officers discovered 29.8 pounds of suspected methamphetamine hidden within the cargo. The estimated street value of the meth was $266,452.
Marijuana Hidden in Mechanical Appliances
The second seizure took place at the same bridge. A 2007 Freightliner carrying a shipment of mechanical appliances raised suspicion, leading to a secondary inspection.
Officers found over 2,708 pounds of marijuana packed inside the trailer. The marijuana had an estimated street value of $6,058,468.
Drug Bust Totaling More Than $6.3 Million
Combined, the two seizures amounted to $6,324,920 in illegal drugs.
“CBP is proud of the work our frontline officers do to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities,” said Port Director Alberto Flores
“These seizures exemplify the ongoing operational efforts at our cargo facilities to detect high-risk shipments.”
Homeland Security Investigations agents are now handling the investigation into these shipments, and CBP has seized the drugs for further processing.
